Title: Storing ayahuasca seeds
Post by: adamantasaurus on October 07, 2013, 10:00:21 PM
Hello,

I am thinking about order some red white and black ayahuasca seeds off of ebay, but I am not going to be around to germinate them for quite a while so I was thinking of storing them in the fridge until I get back. Does anyone know how long ayahuasca seeds stay viable if stored in a sealed glass mason jar in the fridge?

No apparently they lose viability regardless of storage.

Banisteriopsis seeds (and probably many seeds belonging to the Malphigiaceae family) are recalcitrant or at least intermediate between recalcitrant and orthodox, which means they are not tolerant to drying and freezing in preservation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recalcitrant_seed). I don't know for how long did you intend to store them, but good chances of success when germinating them require using fresh seed. I have seen seeds germinating during the year after being harvested, but the viability greatly decreases after a few months.

So if you want to grow Banisteriopsis plants, sow the seeds as soon as you get them - and wait to get them until you're ready to sow, making sure the seeds have been picked in the most recent season.

Kind regards,

Mandrake

I got old caapi seeds from online vendor before and it was 9 months old seeds. Germination rate is only about 10%. Only 2 sprouted from 20.

Did you use GA3 at all when germinating them?
