I've had a cacti seedling growing for about 3 months in a pot. I placed the top half of a 2 liter bottle over it (with the top off) to protect the young plant from the elements. It toppled over once before and I held it up and pushed to growing medium around the roots to make it more firm and let it be. Could I possible just dump about a 1/4" inch of white sand around the cacti to hold it up? What are some of the precautions I should take when attempting something like this?

That's what I do. I just sprinkle it right on top.

I have some young seedlings like that, I just bury a good portion of that skinny part under the soil.
