Title: repotting barrel cacti
Post by: hereje on October 01, 2013, 03:15:06 PM
I have a potted indoor only golden barrel cactus (echinocactus grusonii) that outgrew its pot this year
im not an experienced cacti gardener so im questioning if i could repot it now or if i should wait till
spring i also intend to use a potting mix containing 1part compost 2 parts potting soil 3 parts perlite
and 1 part sand - any advice would be greatly appreciated

Do you make them go dormant over winter?

If the plant is otherwise healthy and vigorous, there is little risk of transplanting causing issues, no matter what season you choose to do your repot.  So long as you respect the roots and provide a similar, if not identical soil at the time of transplant, all will be well.

New wisdom - im not sure what you mean but im assuming that you mean not watering it, i aloways
give water when the soil is dry more than two inches deep

shpongle lover - it is extremely healthy in every aspect but i dont think i can match the current soil
so do you think it would be helpful if i mix a handfull of the old soil in with the new ?

Well cactus go dormant in the winter usually if they aren't getting as much light or when it gets cold. But by your response i'm guessing you have never intentionally made it go dormant.

So yeah man. You can go ahead and re-pot it now.

If the soil is free from insects or other pests, and not exhausted of nutrients, then by all means use as much of it as you can.  Soil can always be ameliorated with cactus fertilizer.  Golden barrels are pretty darned robust as a rule.   I'm sure it will do great and appreciate the extra room.

DonĀ“t water it for a week or two. Let the damage to the roots heal first, otherwise it might contract a disease or bacteria.
