Cactus I'd please
« on: October 22, 2013, 07:58:53 PM »

Hi ev1

Please may I ask for help on I'd'ing this cactus, I have had them for 3 years there was 3 of them but I cut the small pup off as a gift to a m8 of mine, it is starting to flower on 1 and 3 on the other, I wanted to know would I be able to pollinate 1 with the other? The only problem is the 1's flower will be ready before the other, I have no clue on what species it is and if its possible and hope a more experienced grower may help me, thanks in advanced for all help and thank you for reading.

Regards, Da-1

Looks to be a Gymnocalycium of some sort, would need a pic of the flower for a better id. The flowers should be self fertile, but cross pollinating usually makes stronger seeds.

If you rub the flower with a q-tip the pollen will become embedded in the fibers. You can then use that 1-tip to pollinate other flowers. Pollen can be stored indefinitely.

I imagine it would probably be best to do it right after it opens before the pollen starts falling off.

Check out "thelocactus" genus

Possibly thelocactus hexaedrophorus.

Not sure though,
