Greenhouse advice - first timer
« on: October 30, 2018, 11:25:17 PM »

Hey STS community, I recently purchased a small 3'x3' greenhouse with a height of about 3'. I'm using a greenhouse for the first time and winter is coming soon. I'm growing some salvia divinorum plants in there and see a few leaves with the tips blackening which is, obviously, not a great sign. I've had these plants for several months in the ground, removed them and placed them in pots due to incredibly slow growth and now placed them in my greenhouse for fear that they would be killed in the lower temperatures to come. What should I be considering and using this greenhouse? how often should I open the greenhouse to aerate? Should I place the greenhouse elsewhere? It's currently in a shaded spot under my citrus tree. Any advice would be appreciated.

Salvia like being cool, but is very sensitive to cold,
even sub-freezing temps kill, if it freezes it's dead.
sometimes they can regrow if it has a green stem.

what do you think is causing the leaves black tips?
to cold, to hot, to much humid, not enough humid?

My salvia is having the same issue which is slowly getting better as i lightly mist it several times a day to keep the humidity up. It would be best to create a humidity dome because direct moisture can also cause other problems like the bugs that have been eating the leafs.

I think the blackening leaves could be caused from overly moistened soil. I may have overwatered them. Or it could be from a lack of moisture/humidity in the air. I'm not sure because this is the first time that i grow Salvia. The greenhouse i have is completely covered so I can definitely mist the greenhouse with a pump spray in the mornings and evenings.

Would it be wiser to place the greenhouse in direct sunlight rather than shaded under my tree? It would increase temps in the house and temperatures are going down so i don't think it would cause the plants harm. Any opinions on this?

i think you're right.. overwatering can cause that.. just let them dry out some.
Moving greenhouse sounds like good experiment. would help them dry out also.
maybe when you can keep eye on it from time to time to make sure it's not to hot.
