Slugs is my guess, I had similar wounds on my Bridgesii and the next night I found a Limax maximus(Leopard Slug, Great Grey Slug) all up in it's business. He was relocated to the other side of town(I'm a bit of a pacifist, especially with anything bigger than 1/4 inch...) and I haven't had any trouble since.

Here's a pic of one with someone's hand for scale, in case you haven't seen them. They're all over the place out here. http://www.shropscwgs.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Limax-maximus-250812-007.jpgÂ

My first instinct says slugs as well.

GrowerAndaShower, out of curiosity, is there a specific reason not to kill slugs over 1/4 of an inch? do they provide some benefit to the environment, or is this just a preference?

Im not that much of a pacifist when they are eating my plants, but, i would really hate to wipe out a whole local ecosystem on accident. >.<
