White powder on Acacia seeds I received
« on: January 23, 2017, 11:38:19 PM »

Any idea what is going on here?
There is a white powdery coating on these Acacia burkittii seeds I received.
It rubs off.

Allow me to answer my own question.
Found out it is actually an insecticide that is harmless to the seeds.
Was just stumped at first.

Acacia burkittii viability and germination
« Reply #2 on: January 31, 2017, 05:49:33 PM »

I'm really hoping to get some Acacia burkittii going this year.
Unfortunately I've gotten 0% germination of said seeds from two sources.
Hot water treatment swelled the seeds, then sowed in moist coir/perlite at room temp.
I'll try a germination test on moistened paper towels.
Am nicking the seeds this time, and the seed coat is much thicker than other Acacias.

A lot of people use the paper towel method successfully, but I've had better luck direct sowing into soil with some perlite added after getting the seeds to swell with hot water or nicking or some combo thereof.

I'll dig around when I have a few minutes. I may have a few burkitti seeds, but I'm not positive. If so, I'll send you a PM.  :)

Thanks to both of you. I'm interested indeed. But don't yet have PM access.
Pretty much concluded these batches just aren't going to germinate.
I've had much better luck with A. courtii, and some success with A. acuminata.

Hey Gardener... sorry didn't realize you weren't a member yet. I can't promote on my phone, but as soon as I'm at my laptop I'll set you up.

I couldn't find my burkittii seeds, so hit up Hummingbird after I promote you. :-)

I have good luck with sterilized nail clippers. As long as ya don't go too deep. It gives the water an easy route in. From my research if you get the correct depth it won't expose the embryo to pathogens any more than any other method. Good luck!
