1st Bee species listed as Endangered
« on: January 11, 2017, 03:36:08 PM »

The rusty patch bumblebee has been placed on the endangered species list.  It is the first bee species in the continental US to be placed on the list.

It is one of 48 species of bumblebee in N America (20,000 species of bee worldwide).  Populations seem to be located in the NE only, including Canada.  The rapid decline may be attributed to a bacteria or virus spread from commercial to wild populations, as well as pesticides and other contributing environmental factors.

I believe a big issue with Bombus is the widespread breeding of Bombus Terrestris to utilize in pollination.

Those bumblebees rival other species after being introduced massively and also are one of the few that benefit greatly from artificial bumblebee housing.

Whatever we cultivate or domesticate, it will sooner or later rival wild related species. So monocultures are the enemy of diversity.
