Do bee's provide protection?

Say one was to farm bees close to their home.  Would the colony of bees being raised defend the area from other insects trying to move in such as wasps and hornets?  Just curious.

They will only defend their hive from other insects, not the outlying area.

Interesting.  So have other insects been known to take over a hive and ruin the bee farmers harvest?
