Possible topics could include: cultivation, Mycology techniques, Mycology equipment, research articles, suppliers, and other resources for edible and medicinal fungi.
What About Psycho-Active Species of any Fungi Containing Psilocybin, Psilocin, and/or Baeocystin?
Discussing, posting photos of, or any references to fungi containing psilocybin, psilocin, and/or baeocystin is not allowed. As explained by STS's FAQ:
Some users may be interested in discussing or trading mushroom related materials, particularly the psycho-active species containing psilocybin and psilocin. Sadly, growing these types of fungi is illegal almost everywhere, so trading live fungi tissue or discussion about them, including growing questions and grow logs, is not allowed in STS.
Mushroom spores of any kind do not contain scheduled substances, hence they are technically legal. Please note, however, that unless you live in a country where growing psychoactive mushrooms is allowed, their spores are basically precursors for producing illegal substances, so we do not encourage trading spores of psychoactive fungi.
Discussion about growing other species of fungi that do not contain scheduled substances is allowed, and so is trading legal mushroom growing tools or supplies.
Is Identification and Harvest of Wild Fungi an Acceptable Topic?
In short, no.
Identification of wild fungi is a complex process. It takes a lot of experience and many steps to properly identify wild fungi.
Furthermore, some edible fungi have poisonous and/or deadly "look-a-likes" that if mistaken for an edible could cause serious harm or death. To keep members and guests of this community safe, we will not identify wild fungi. We will focus our attention on
cultivation of known species that are edible and/or medicinal.
What Constitutes an Edible Mushroom?
As defined by Wikipedia:
Edible mushrooms are the fleshy and edible fruit bodies of several species of macrofungi (fungi which bear fruiting structures that are large enough to be seen with the naked eye). They can appear either below ground (hypogeous) or above ground (epigeous) where they may be picked by hand. Edibility may be defined by criteria that include absence of poisonous effects on humans and desirable taste and aroma.
What Constitutes a Medicinal Mushroom?
A medicinal mushroom is one that has been used to treat or prevent ailments and/or increase function of a system in the human body.
For the purposes of STS, any medical claims about a certain mushroom need to be supported by a peer-reviewed article or reference.
What About Fungi That Can Be Used In Myco-Remediation, Symbiotic Relationships, or Other Gardening and/or Permaculture Concents?
All mushrooms or fungi that fall into this category are completely acceptable as long as they do not fall into the psychoactive category.
What About Poisonous Fungi That Can Be Rendered Edible through Various Processes?
For the safety of STS members and guests, we will not discuss poisonous mushrooms that can be rendered edible through various processes. Such methods will not be discussed either.
Mostly Importantly, What About Sharing/Trading EAMF Cultures?
Trading EAMF cultures is encouraged as long as they meet the aforementioned requirements. It is the responsibility of the receiver to be aware of and follow any laws related to receiving live mushroom culture and/or spores.
What About Vendors?
Please list vendors who supply Edible and Medicinal mushroom cultures and mycology equipment. If they sell products that we aren't allowed to trade the vendor will be removed.
Thank you. Let's learn and share.
