Title: Psychotria 'Nexus' (P. carthaginensis and P. viridis hybrid)
Post by: Saros on August 28, 2013, 05:56:08 PM
I just stumbled across a discussion of this plant on another forum. Apparently it's a hybrid of P. carthaginensis and P. viridis.... making it much faster growing and more cold hardy plant than regular P. viridis. For folks like myself in zone 6b, this sounds really interesting.

Do any of our Aussie friends have one of these? And is there any chance we could get  some leaf cuttings sent over to the states?

That would be very awesome!  Does that website not ship to the states?

According to this page (http://herbalistics.com.au/shop/catalog/shipping.php) they don't ship live plants internationally.

I see.  I have a couple friends in Ausie.  I'll talk to them and see if I can get a few leaves out here.

EDIT: It looks like that website is closed till january. :(.  I'll look in other places for that.

I am in the process of a trade on another website for a Psychotria "Nexus" plant.  Once it grows out I will have leaves for my friends here at STS. :)

I remember reading a thread months back on another forum about this strain (I'm pretty sure they had the same link too), I had my interest in it ever since.

New Wisdom if that trade is successful, once your plant gets big enough I'd love to trade ;)

This is interesting. Has anyone heard of a Carth x Alba or a Viridis x Alba cross? It will have fun experimenting w/ that when I have some more Psychotria species in my grow list.

According to a website I was just reading P. carthaginensis is the pistillate parent while P. viridis is the staminate parent of P. nexus, I wonder why they bred it that way, and not the other way around? I don't know a whole lot about plant genetics though...

Well, nevermind about the psychotria nexus.  Turns out that Australians hate Americans or something because both of the people that offered me P. "Nexus" were from Australia and both of them decided to just discontinue speaking to me after i told them I'm from the US.  Wouldn't even say no to me, just stopped talking.

You'd think they'd be polite enough to at least explain why they won't talk to you anymore :o

I guess people in the US will have to wait until someone in another country gets a hold of P. 'Nexus' and is able to share it.

You could always make a different screen name and tell them your an Aussie visiting your mother in the US for the summer. ;)

Bummer! Hopefully these show up in the states sooner than later... I will keep searching.

If all else fails maybe someone can try crossing their own plants.. It will be a good long while before mine are mature enough to attempt it.

Eh, that'd be lying.  I can probably find it somewhere else if I try hard enough.

EDIT. I have rescinded the offer as things have changed over the last few years.

That would  be awesome fairdinkumseeds. I'd gladly take you up on that offer:)

New Wisdom, you mentioned the website was closed until January.. I can't seem to find any info of that on the website. I'm probably just overlooking it. But if it does happen to be open, I'd love to get my hands on one of these plants before winter here.

Hope this thread isn't too old to reply to, but I recently got ahold of (what I was told are) a couple of these plants here in the states. Keeping one in the soil and trying my hand at hydroponics for the second plant :)

Does anyone have leaf cuttings in the UK or Europe?

Is this reasonably hardy? As in able to be grown indoors, or even outside frost-free?
