Title: When to water new rooted plants?
Post by: OfCows on May 15, 2018, 12:07:36 PM
Hi,

A quick question for those more knowledgeable than me (please)...

I recently (~2 weeks ago) received some bare root Trichocereus plants, which I've potted but so far held off from watering, to allow them to adjust to their new home. My question is, how much time should be left between potting and the first watering in such cases?

;) Thanks for any help you can offer,

Im proly the wrong person to offer any suggestions or advice, but the one trich ive received rooted already, i waited a good month at least to water after repotting.....but i was misting occassionaly...itd be fine im sure if you forgot about it for 2 months.  I think they do better without our meddling.

Thanks for your input MorningDew - that's reassuring as it's how I've treated all my other rooted Trich's in the past! Just wanted to hear somebody else's perspective, so I'll stick with the wait-until-they-look-dehydrated method for now.

If my Trichocereus are well calloused and rooted... I water the same day I get them. If my Trichocereus are well calloused and have no roots, I water the same day I get them.

If there is no callous and I have just cut them, I will often wait 24 hours before I plant them in soil I watered 24 hours earlier. I will expect my soil to be moist to the touch, but not damp at this point. I will allow the soil to become dry and to the touch for 24 hours and then water again. Its not an exact science and each has their own way, but I've rooted tips less than an inch in height with this method.
