Post by: LIBERTYNY on December 19, 2016, 06:42:02 AM
Any one ever apply for a USDA Small Lots of Seed Permit ? ?

Most everything I read about the process is unclear, according to the application it can be done by mail, according to some site's I would have to go down to the USDA office to show ID. ? ?

Give them a call, works for most stuff.

Most of the application is online, you will have to go to a USDA service center to show ID to finalize the process.
I have used my permit a few times, and as long as you follow the directions it is fairly easy and you can get seeds from just about anywhere without hassle.

Did mine 100% via mail.  Just follow the online instructions and if you need any help let me know I might be able to direct you.

Also I found out my local Ag extension to be a tremendous value for deciphering all the confusing (surprise!) Ag regs.

Refuse to call the gubmint but present all necessary data in the end anyways ?
Thanks to border- and limitless orwellianism a call wont give them any information they didnt already have, I guess. Otherwise get a prepaid :) But anyways, seems like we have enough knowledgeable people to guide anyone through the process, which gets me thinking: Writeup / Howto anyone ?

Ian, is this kind of permit "shall be issued" ?

not just any seed but specific seed from a specific country through a specific point of origin.

LIBERTYNY, yea I just mailed it all in and in about three weeks the certificate came in the mail but I think there was a third step for verification or clarification (I want sure the destination point I think), but unlike some gubmint agencies (USCIS you bastards!) they called me to clarify instead of outright rejecting

A grain of salt.......I know a guy in AZ who obtained such a permit legally, only to have a large shipment of seeds from south america opened and seized by customs.

If the sender doesnt include phytosanitary and cites certs with the shipment you are basically wasting your time with a usda permit
