Plant Gallery

Hello STS members,

As requested we have started this thread to make a collection of plant pictures for use in identification and as a reference. Here you can post pictures of your plants.

Please only post in this thread if:

You have a plant, variety or age of the plant that is not listed in the gallery.
You think your picture deserves to be in the gallery as well (nicer quality, better resolution, ect...)
If you have any corrections or requests.

Please make sure the specimen is the center of the focus in the picture. Please do not post a picture that has several different plants in the shot unless the main focus is obvious. If we have 5 pictures already of a species in a certain stage (Seedling, Adult, ect) please do not post anymore. They also need to be clear and focused and not too small or overly large. We prefer that you take the pictures yourself and the plant is confirmed to be the species you label it. If you didn't take the picture please be sure that it is not copyrighted and the species is confirmed. When you post seedlings it's preferable that they have grown some distinguishing features rather than just being in the cotyledon phase. With your post include the proper Genus and species name, the strain (if known), and the condition/age of the plant. As this will make it easier to update.

Also, make sure that they are ethnobotanical species and not just ornamentals. Please do not use outside hosting services when posting the pictures. Upload them on the forum uploader when posting in this thread.

Any contribution helps, so please post your pictures.

We'll keep a list of the current species we have in the gallery and each name will be linked to the pictures. ^{Contributions are greatly appreciated!}

ipomea tricolor (heavenly blue) seedling - cotyledon + first leaf (you can see two immature leafs on their way)

mimosa hostilis/tenuiflora seedling - cotyldeon (hard to get a good image of this sucker, after a number of attempts this was the best - i am totally ok with someone else replacing this with a higher-quality image)

i guess that is all for now until either my ololiuqui germinate, or these plants mature significantly

I can only find a really poor quality camera at the moment, and this was the only decent picture I took.

Argyreia nervosa var nervosa "Ingham fractal" (well that's what the locals dubbed it, for obvious reasons)
Its quite a bit different to the original/standard Argyreia nervosa var nervosa that's grows everywhere along the highways of northern Qld and Hawaii.(so I am told, never to Hawaii myself)
This seed was collected straight off the mother, in the rainforest of Ingham, Queensland.
Wider than my chest, like a strangler fig, and a long, long, way up. If anyone is in that part of OZ, I can give rough directions.
Its HUGE so you can't really miss it.
Vines growing just a couple km up the road are a pretty poor substitute for this one. I am on the 5th generation of hand/self pollinating it, and the unique differences seem to be breeding true.
Completely different in all the ways that matter to the Argyreia nervosa var speciosa that's so common around Brisbane.
Got hammered in the flooding, looks like it will pull through ok, but not much happening since then. Should have a few spare seeds for trade around Christmas with any luck.

If you look closely you can see the prominent juvenile spines that help distinguish this variety. My own belief ( and it seems also many others ) is that this is a hybrid as it will not accept pollen from any other Lophophora in my greenhouse thus far but did accept pollen from a Mammillaria and proceeded to give seeds which is indeed rare, sadly none of these have germinated.

Or what I think is ipomea purpurea. It grows locally USDA zone 5 (cold). It dies back in the winter and returns every year. It starts germinating in may/June and sets flowers in September/October with fresh seeds in mid to late October.

I have plenty of seeds if anyone wants some :-)

Note: the flowers come in slightly varying shades.

Here's the flowers of my prized Nicotiana sylvestris I grew this season.

The flowers had a smell unlike anything I've experienced before. Soft jasmine with deep tobacco undertones. It's worth cultivating for the smell alone!

The seller (ethnoplantes) won't reply as to how old/fresh they are or might not be but I managed to find some of their cool vids on youtube
and they were also the same price of some other virola i bought that haven't arrived yet

incidentally; the others from a different supplier were bought as 10x guaranteed fresh & viable nuts for the same price (including postage)
and wouldn't sell me a bean until they said trees were ready....

The two "validus" came from Sacred Succulents labeled as validus. I'll add on there that they are SS validus. I don't want to change them to taquimbalensis though because that will just confuse things. I could even say that validus isn't a valid species and just mark any validus in the future as terscheckii. But again, it would just confuse things. These are the plants that sacred succulents sells as validus, so, I think it would be most beneficial to label them what SS labelled them.

Not all of the ID's in this gallery are 100% It would be a pretty hard job to do if I had to 100% ID everything in here. Especially given the confusing nature of trichocereus (and other cacti) taxonomy.

And by the way everyone, I'm working on updating the gallery now. Been slacking off for a while.

I have one seedling from SS (grafted) labelled as T. validus seed. Going to be grating it to a huge PC pachanoi to speed up the growth. Very stoked to see what it turns into. It doesn't look like any of my taquimbalensis or terscheckii seedlings I have, but it definitely has a big trich look by the number of ribs it has. Still very juvenile spinage so It's not a good ID reference so I wont be adding it to the gallery just yet, but I will share some photos.

My favourite plants are the beautiful acacias :)
The climate here where I currently live (South of Germany) has average warmest days in July with 18 deg. C (wikipedia) (usually gets quite hot, though (30-35 deg. C.) and average coldest times in January with -0.7 deg. C (wikipedia) (can easily get down to minus 10 deg. C., though).

Attached some of the plants I have grown/ am growing (enjoy):

1) A. acuminata (broad phyllodes)
2) A. obtusifolia stem/branch (approx. 2.5-3 year old plant)
3) A. obtusifolia (approx. 2.5-3 year old plant)
4) Mitragyna speciosa (RIFAT strain) (bought as small plant)

They are under a tree that's pretty shady. Rays shoot in a bit in the early morning and dappled through leaves and branches during the day. They really like it under that tree! They really didn't like my greenhouse though. Its super bright in there all over.

Next summer I hope to have everything nice and large and capable of seeding. From there I hope to be seeding others with these grand plants. We shall see if I can pull it off...

Nice:) I have some Psychotrias under a weeping cherry tree and they're loving it. I just parked them there because I had no more room under the shade cloth. I hadn't thought to put any of my other plants under there. I think I'll try sticking one or two of the Ibogas under there as well and see how they respond.

I only accidentally had success only by trial and error. Got lucky I saved several of my plants time and time again. I think I nearly killed those ibogas probably 2-4 times!

In other weird planting news of mine I have flowers forming on my 2ft tall A. peregrina of two years old. Also harvested viable seed from a few D. leptolobus! The kicker on that is that the plants are like four months old! I can post pics of the pods tomorrow that are still maturing but here's a pic of them in flower less than a month ago.

Certainly did get flowers on my mimosa last year at about 6-8 months old. Only set a single pod yielding one not viable seed though. This year I got several pods and five good looking seeds but I haven't sprouted them yet. I will soon because I'm pretty curious!

The top several inches of the growing tip are still fairly new growth so are naturally less pigmented than the older stuff. The plants had few leaves after winter so most all of that is newer foliage. I guess when looking at them in the sun from my back door literally right now they look slightly lime colored all over though.

Cool, sounds like the same deal with mine. They dropped most of their leaves indoors over the winter (all but the few topmost branches), and after moving them back outside, the rest fell off as the new lime green stuff was just emerging.

They're both growing steadily at the moment. I'd love to see some flowers on them this year:)

First few are were identified by me and then later confirmed by someone a little more in the know as Acacia Longifolia subsp. Sophorae. I'm sure that Acacia Phlebophylla has some genetic history with this plant.

The second few are some pictures of an apparently rare (outside of Australia anyway) Psychotria hybrid, Psychotria 'Nexus'. It's a cross between Psychotria Viridis and Psychotria Carthaginensis. Notices the 'Espinas' or spines under the leaves, the tell tale sign of tryptamine potency in Psychtrias.

Haha Oo yeah that guy is no joke! It's sometimes listed as Brugmansia aurea cv. "Culebra"... Height-wise, it grows a bit slower than my other bruggies, but it grows dense fast with thin, trichome covered leaves (look at those hairs!)... Handle with care!!;)

Oo the baneful nightshades!!;) pretty magical residents of the garden... I mean stay safe, but really, just treat them RESPECT; you take care of them, they take care if you... One of my favorites for sure...

The epilantha, obregonia, (I think) pascana, and (not sure about) the trich hybrid aren't. Since they're usually hybridized with echinopsis I doubt it's "very ethnobotanical." Also there's not really a section we can put that one in anyways since there isn't a name for the clone. There are tons of trich/echinopsis hybrid clones. You can add the pascana though since we can put it in the trich section.

Yeah, that's why I said to add the Pascana. I'm not really sure about it. And I just realized there is a name for the Trich hybrid photo. Skipped over it, but I don't think we should add those to the gallery since there's so many of them and I don't think anyone uses those as ethnobotanicals.

Ipomoeia alba, one of the most beautiful plants I have ever grown. I have one seed left that's about 9 years old, I will try and see if its still viable. The blooms smell the exact same as acacia blooms / indole smells :) glad people keepint it alive!

Finally I ran across this plant again after nearly four years! Its a wild vining ground mimosa with small briers on the vines and leaf/flower stems. It produces a big taproot for such a spindly plant.

Now the good stuff...I once heard from a pretty reliable source that this plant is massively strong with light content. The dude told me he'd tried it personally before and it was epic. I do believe the guy. He was once a major guy on the psychedelic scene in our area and is highly educated and well known. That's why I believe what he said about this plant. Let's find out for sure for ourselves...

Not sure exactly of the species but it is a mimosa. Much like M. strigillosa but has small briers and a slightly different look overall. Strigillosa is used commonly for drought tolerant low maintenance lawn plants to replace grass. M. strigillosa has promise for you know...too. Further testing is required but one test was positive thus far from what I hear from a friend...and I have a yard full of strigillosa!

Plantlight I will dig you up one next time I'm out there this Monday if you like. Not sure how well they handle the disturbance but its worth a try. Hit me via pm if you desire!

Here's some quick snaps of my new ~12-inch Trichocereus "Psycho0" x "Super Pedro" hybrids. Not sure if suitable for inclusion but I didn't see them represented here so far.

I've included a flash picture for comparison - the skin looks so different under the strong light! I can take some better pictures once I encounter a sunny day and dig out my decent camera.

Melothria scabra, Mouse melon or Cucamelon fruit. Have a short warm season here and planted it out a bit late, so only got 2 fruit. But it was my first time growing it so still consider it a success! Had read they taste like cucumber with a splash of lemon. Had a yummy cucumber taste, and was quite juicy in the middle. The juice had a great lemon flavor. Beautiful vining plant. Grew in a 3 gallon bucket. With plenty of warmth they're supposed to produce in abundance. So cute!

forreal check out that Acacia ID app, its a pretty nifty tool

according to the lit, longifolia should not be flowering in NSW at this time, says flowers from ~june-oct, fruits nov-jan... but idk how accurate this is

those pics roughly match longifolia, but i think others match better, especially given the flower phenology (wrong season for longi flowers)
well the first pic is pretty blurry, the second one is good, shows true leaves, phyllodes, flowers, seed pods. now we need close ups of each of those, especially flowers

theres over 1200 species of acacia in oz, many are able to hybridize
if you want a fairly definitive ID, we really need measurements, in mm. not trying to be too particular here, thats just how IDing Acacia goes, and distinguishing between two close species.
i can estimate the width of your hand just as well as i can that pen, but it doesnt help with mm measurements
the difference between some species is a matter of millimeters

these are some questions we should try to answer to get a good ID:

phyllode length & width, phyllode shape, nerve #?
leaflet count & dimensions?

close up pics of the flowers, the spike they are on, the connection of the flower spike to the main stem
- are there tiny hairs on the flower spike?
- how many parts are in each flower?
- do the flower spikes branch? (panicle)
- or are they singular spikes? (raceme)
- how long are the spikes?
- do the flowers start immediately from the base of the spikes?
- or is there some stalk space between the branch, before the first flower on the spike?
- are the individual flowers directly on the spike (sessile), or is there a bit of a stem raising them away from the spike?
- how many spikes are present at each leaf axil?

how many seeds per pod?
what are the dimensions of the seeds?
what are the dimensions of the seed pods?
do the seed pods have a distinctive bulge where the seeds are, or are they rather uniformly shaped?
are there tiny hairs on the pod?

thats just a start. i shit you not. acacias are serious botany, they demand respect- if you want to learn the identity of your new friend, you may need to get rrrreal close & personal with it!! but we can do this, with some close up pics including mm measurements!

this is definitely an interesting acacia, so dont get discouraged. If you are willing/able to share seeds, i think lots of members here would be very appreciative. especially if we can get to a solid ID. help me help you help us ;D ;D

Here is my 12 year in-ground California-grown Trichocereus pachanoi monstrose/crested. The single long spines at the base make me think there could be something else in there...

It was purchased as two cuttings in one pot. The cutting on the left usually shows monstrous growth, while the cutting on the right usually exhibits more traditional characteristics.
